Day 18
ms Westerdam
At Sea
Partly Cloudy - 82 Degrees
Have you ever tried to draw a line in the water? Doesn't work. The oceans are covered with imaginary lines: latitude and longitude, political boundaries, shipping lanes. Crossing them is anticlimactic, but we mark the occasion nonetheless.
We have left the Line Islands, but our Line Dance continued today with two important crossings. Overnight, we sailed back across the International Date Line, Eastbound. So, this is our second Wednesday, October 17th. It is...a Hump Day Replay!!! A few hours later, we crossed the Equator from the Northern to the Southern hemisphere. The captain joked that we should have felt the bump. We didn't, but we did feel a transformation. Crossing the Equator is a rite of passage and a coming of age for any mariner. This is what separates the Shellbacks from the Pollywogs. We are all Shellbacks now.
